Sprains and Strains First Aid

If you are not sure whether the injury is a fracture, dislocation, sprain or strain. Always Treat as a Fracture

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Limited mobility

 

Strain

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Muscle spasms
  • Loss of power in limb
  • Muscular tenderness

 

Treatment

  • DRSABCD
  • R.I.C.E therapy (rest, ice, compression, elevation)
  • Rest the injury.
  • Wrap ice (or an ice pack) in a light cloth and apply it to the injured area for 20 minutes every 2 hours for 24 hours. Then for 15 minutes every 4 hours for 24 hours
  • Wrap a broad elastic bandage around the injury
  • Elevate the injury when possible
  • If the injury worsens or is slow to improve see a Doctor
