Note

Poisoning signs and symptoms will vary depending on the age and health of the person, the amount and type of toxin, and the form of exposure (e.g. inhalation, absorption, ingestion)

 

Some of the More Generalized Signs and Symptoms

  • Stomach cramps
  • Diarrhoea
  • Drooling
  • Excessive tears
  • Fever
  • Sweating
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Blurred vision
  • Weakness
  • Thirst
  • Loss of consciousness

 

Treatment

  • DRSABCD
  • Call an ambulance
  • Try to establish what the poison is, the type of exposure and the amount of exposure
  • Contact your local poisons information centre and follow instructions
  • Do not induce vomiting or give anything by mouth unless advised to by the poisons information centre
  • If the patient becomes unconscious follow the unresponsive patient protocol

 

Remember if the poisoning is due to toxic gas or unknown chemical spills call the fire brigade and Do Not Enter until given the all clear
