Generally, changes to the eyes are a very gradual process and you may not notice any signs and symptoms of disease. For this reason it is important to have regular checkups with your optometrist. Most eye problems are completely avoidable or are able to be easily treated.

  • Ultraviolet light can damage your eyes and over a period of time cause conditions like cataracts, so wear a hat and sunglasses when you go outdoors
  • 60 percent of all eye injuries happen in the work place. If your job involves cutting, drilling, sanding, spraying, grinding, hammering, welding, the use of chemicals or anything else that may have an impact on your eyes it is vitally important to wear the appropriate eye protection
  • If you are doing home maintenance, gardening, or using household chemicals wear the appropriate eye protection
  • Have regular checkups with your optometrist. This can help avoid or detect problems at an early stage before any serious damage can occur
  • If you play sports which involve high speed balls like tennis or squash, If you play sports like fencing or any other sport that has a potential for injuries to the eyes you must wear the appropriate eye protection
  • If you ride a bicycle put on some glasses to protect your eyes from projectiles including road grime and grit
  • Have a good diet and exercise routine, this will help maintain good blood vessels, healthy eyes and keep your whole body in shape
  • Keep an eye on your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Normal levels in these three important areas will help to keep your whole body, including your eyes healthy
  • When using your computer take regular breaks to help prevent tired eyes and eye strain – you may do some simple eye exercises to relax the eye muscles like – without moving your head: Look up for 5 seconds, look down for 5 seconds, look left for 5 seconds, look right for 5 seconds and then roll your eyes left and right. This is an excellent exercise that takes 30 seconds
  • Make sure that you have good lighting no matter what you are doing. Lights that are too dim or too bright can cause eye strain
  • Quit Smoking – smoking damages the blood vessels that supply nutrients to the eyes and can cause serious eye problems
