What Is A Black Eye?
A black eye is caused when we get an eye injury and bleed into the skin around the eyes. Although most black eyes are not serious they can indicate a much more severe problem such as a fracture of the bones around the eye or an internal eye injury.
If the injured person is experiencing double vision, or has bruising to both eyes (referred to as raccoon eyes) there may be a skull fracture.
Black Eye Treatment
- Wrap some ice in a clean cloth or apply an ice pack as soon as possible to help reduce swelling – Do not put pressure on the eye itself
- Repeat this a few times a day for a couple of days
- If you see blood in the white of the eye, or the colored parts, you will need to see an eye specialist (ophthalmologist) immediately
- Get professional care immediately if you are having vision problems such as blurring or double vision, or there is bruising around both eyes
